Off the Beaten Track

Well, I made to El Salvador safe and sound. I had the easiest border crossing. There was an officer that basically came on the bus and checked everyone´s ID and passports. There was no waiting in line, no stamps, and no entrance fees. Later, I found out that the stamp I got in Guatemala covered Honduras and El Salvador as well. Sweet action.

There is this park called Parque El Impossible and you can either take two routes. Go to the actual park entrance and pay the entrance fee or go to a small town called Tacuba, on the other side of the park and hike the back of the park for free. Most travellers choose the Tacuba route. The Lonely Planet said to look for this guy named Manolo Gonzalez as he is the one who organizes all the tours and takes you into the park. He´s a pretty funny and laid back kinda guy. He also knowns the park inside out. The tour to El Impossible was great. Nice views and the trails were out of this world. It was so good that I decided to stay another day and check out his other tours.

On the second day, he took us on a tour to see the waterfalls in the park. This is probably one of the better tours he has as the difficulty level for this one is pretty high. Along the way, we had about six major jumps in the water. When I say major, I really mean it. They are not like jumping into a big swimming pool. There was one huge jump about 10 metres high where I had to jump and you can see rocks jutting out along the side of the waterfall of where you´re jumping. You basically have to get a running start to jump or else you would hit the rocks! I was freaked out of my mind. Manolo said I had about 5 seconds to jump or else I would walk down. When I looked over the waterfall I just saw the big huge rock right underneath me. The 5 seconds were up already. Manolo said I was walking. I said no, and without thinking I just took a huge jump and landed in the water safely. It was one of the most craziest things I´ve ever done.

Holy crap dude…jumping waterfalls? That’s awesome!

We’ll have to find something cool like that to do in Olympic National Forest. Like…jumping…bears?
